Caring for Seniors in 2012

Let’s go back to around the year 1900. The United States had 46 states and 10 miles of paved road for 8,000 cars.  Silent films, air travel and modern healthcare were just beginning to take shape. In 1900, the average person could expect to live to age 50. Today, turning 50 is an important milestone that many people will achieve, but it’s not the mark of elder age. In fact, a study from the University of Chicago says that the average lifespan today is 78.1 years. In a short time, we have been able to add almost 30 years to our lifelines.

With longer life expectancy comes a greater need for senior care. According to the University of Chicago “as more people reach their 80s and 90s, the number of elderly needing assistance with daily living increases, along with the responsibilities of those who provide care for them”. At SYNERGY HomeCare, we make this responsibility one of our highest priorities.

Home care is popular for this growing number of seniors. The National Association of Home Care of Hospice reports that 69% of people receiving in-home care are over the age of 65. There are many reasons for people of all ages to need in-home care, and seniors have a unique perspective. Seniors and their families often face situations in which poor health and loss of eyesight, hearing and stability make it difficult to live independently at home.

At these times, tough decisions are often forced upon seniors. While elderly family member know their  loved ones don’t mean to make them feel less loved or valued, this often happens when they are confronted with tough topics. After a long life of taking care of themselves, they slowly lose their ability to drive, cook, shop and even live alone. The thought of moving away from their home makes the aging process even harder.

Caring for seniors requires that, while tending to their physical needs, we also protect and elevate their sense of dignity, emotional well being and self-worth. SYNERGY HomeCare staff and caregivers understand these feelings that seniors may have. We make it our daily mission to turn these situations into liberating and strengthening experiences.

It’s not 1900 anymore. Our world holds many more opportunities in much longer lifetimes. If you need help in your elder years, or know a senior who needs assistance in their home, please call your local SYNERGY HomeCare agency.
