January Is Cervical Health Awareness Month. Cervical cancer affects the female reproductive system. It is caused by the human papillomavirus which is a common virus that can be passed from one person to another during sex.
About 12,000 women each year are diagnosed with cervical cancer. Of those 12,000, about one third will die from the cancer. Cervical cancer, especially when caught early, is highly preventable and treatable thanks to today's screenings and vaccinations. Women should be urged this month not to forget to visit the doctor for their yearly exams, where they can be screened for cervical cancer and other women health issues.
