Veterans Day is an official holiday to honor all people who have served in the United States armed service, both living and dead.  Some people mistakenly think it is only to honor those who have died in combat but Memorial Day has been reserved for those who have fallen.  Veterans Day coincides with Armistice Day or Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other parts of the world.  This day of refection came about at the time of World War I when an armistice, or cessation of hostilities, went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.  For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”  One year later, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. (U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs)  In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day, and called upon Americans everywhere to rededicate themselves to the cause of peace.
