Unfortunately, many families are not prepared to manage the legal and financial impacts of an Alzheimer’s or dementia diagnosis. Medical, legal, and financial experts encourage seniors recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or another serious illness that causes decline in mental and physical health to establish, review, and update advance directives as early as possible. The sooner legal and financial plans are put in place, the more likely the person diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia will be able to participate in the planning process.

Nearly 5.8 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, which is a “type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks,” according to the Alzheimer’s Association. One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.
