California Department of Public Health officials reported 79 confirmed measles cases in the state – 52 of those cases are linked to an outbreak at Disneyland. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that is preventable through vaccinations, according to CDPH. CDPH recommends that individuals receive two doses of measles-containing vaccine (MMR vaccine) to prevent infection, especially if the individual plans to travel or congregate in crowded areas such as airports, shopping malls and tourist attractions and resorts, such as Disneyland.
Measles is widespread in many parts of the world, including Europe, Africa and Asia. The virus lives in the nose and throat mucus of an infected person and spreads to others through coughing and sneezing. Measles also lives on surfaces, and can live for nearly two hours on a surface or in an airspace where the infected person coughed or sneezed. “If other people breathe the contaminated air or touch the infected surface, then touch their eyes, noses or mouths, they can become infected,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Measles is so contagious that if one person has it, 90 percent of the people close to that person who are not immune will also become infected.”
Twenty-five measles cases have been confirmed in the city of Orange, while 13 cases have been confirmed in San Diego, 12 cases in Los Angeles, seven cases in Ventura and four cases in Riverside.
Although you and your loved ones may not have recently visited Disneyland, you still may have been exposed to the deadly virus. Have you and your senior parent visited the grocery store, flea market or airport? Airborne illnesses are easily transferred and contracted. We at Synergy HomeCare Anaheim Hills believe that health knowledge is power, and want you and your loved ones to:
- Receive the MMR vaccine if you frequent public places
- Know the signs of this potentially deadly disease
The symptoms of measles generally appear about seven to 14 days after a person is infected, and typically being with:
- High fever
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
Two to three days after symptoms begin, tiny white spots (Koplik spots) may appear inside the mouth, according to the CDC. Three to five days after symptoms begin, a rash may break out and the infected person may suffer a fever of more than 104 degrees.
If you and your loved ones live in the Inland Empire or surrounding areas, consider protecting your health and well being and receive an MMR vaccine today.
