Hearing loss is a sudden or gradual decrease in how well a person can hear, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). It is one of the most common conditions affecting older and elderly adults. “Approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss and nearly half of those older than 75 have difficulty hearing,” according to NIDCD. “Having trouble hearing can make it hard to understand and follow a doctor's advice, to respond to warnings, and to hear doorbells and alarms. It can also make it hard to enjoy talking with friends and family. All of this can be frustrating, embarrassing, and even dangerous.”

Arthritis means inflammation or swelling of one or more joints, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The term arthritis describes more than 100 conditions that affect the joints, tissues around the joint, and other connective tissues. Specific symptoms vary depending on the type of arthritis, but usually include joint pain and stiffness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If your senior parent suffers with joint pain and stiffness, it’s possible that they suffer with arthritis. If your senior parent is struggling with pain and immobility, make an appointment with their doctor to determine if arthritis is the cause of discomfort. Common types of arthritis include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, both of which are more common in people ages 50 and older.

Osteoarthritis is sometimes called degenerative joint disease or “wear and tear” arthritis. It most frequently occurs in the hands, hips, and knees. Signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis include:

  • Pain or aching
  • Stiffness
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Swelling

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease, which means that the immune system attacks healthy cells in the body, causing inflammation (painful swelling) in the affected parts of the body, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Rheumatoid arthritis commonly affects joints in the hands, wrists, and knees. Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include:

  • Pain or aching in more than one joint
  • Stiffness in more than one joint
  • Tenderness and swelling in more than one joint
  • The same symptoms on both sides of the body (such as in both hands or both knees)
  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Fatigue, tiredness, or weakness

Certain factors have been shown to be associated with a greater risk of arthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Risk factors include:

  • The risk of developing most types of arthritis increases with age.
  • Most types of arthritis are more common in women; 52 percent of all adults with arthritis are women.
  • Specific genes are associated with a higher risk of certain types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Obesity. Excess weight can contribute to both the onset and progression of knee osteoarthritis.
  • Joint injuries. Damage to a joint can contribute to the development of osteoarthritis in that joint.
  • Infection. Many microbial agents can infect joints and potentially cause the development of various forms of arthritis.
