Pressure ulcers (also known as pressure sores or bedsores) “are areas of damaged skin caused by staying in one position for too long,” according to MedlinePlus. Bedsores commonly form when the blood supply to an area of the body is slowed or stopped and when the bones (such as ankle, back, elbow, heel, and hip bones) become close to the skin. When blood supply is reduced, the skin in the affected area dies, resulting in an open crater or ulcer. People at risk for developing bedsores include those who are bedridden, those who use a wheelchair, or those who are physically unable to move or change their position. Other causes may including having a disease that affects blood flow, having fragile skin, or living with incontinence. “Pressure sores can cause serious infections, some of which are life-threatening,” according to MedlinePlus.
