Coughing, sneezing, and sniffling season has arrived, and with it increases the risk of catching the flu. Protect yourself and your loved one this season-get vaccinated.
Influenza, or the flu, is a disease that can lead to serious illness, hospitalization, and even death. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports " over a period of 31 seasons between 1976 and 2007, estimates of flu-associated deaths in the United States range from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people. During a regular flu season, about 90 percent of deaths occur in people 65 years and older."
Flu season in the U.S. begins as early as October. The CDC recommends that people get vaccinated against the flu as soon as vaccinations become available in their community.
Flu vaccinations are recommended for people ages 6 months and older. However, "people who have certain medical conditions including asthma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease ," and people who are 65 years and older, are at a high risk of developing serious complications such as pneumonia if they get sick with the flu, according to the CDC. Human immune systems become weaker with age, which places elderly people at greater risk of severe illness from the flu. It's important for elderly people to get vaccinated.
If you care for or live with someone who is at risk for developing serious complications, protect yourself and get vaccinated. Flu vaccines are offered at your primary care physician's office, clinics, and health departments.
