Sun Safety Tips for Spring and Summer-RIVERSIDE/ CORONA

The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Do you or your senior parent have skin cancer? Or, do you think you and your family members are at risk? Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. The most common types of skin cancer – basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas – are curable, but can be disfiguring and costly, according to the CDC.

UV rays are an invisible kind of radiation that comes from the sun, tanning beds and sunlamps. UV rays can penetrate and change skin cells, which can cause sunburn, change skin texture, cause the skin to age prematurely and lead to skin cancer. UV rays also have been linked to eye conditions such as cataracts, according to the CDC.

The temptations of the spring and summer sunshine may be too hard to ignore. Therefore, we at Synergy HomeCare Corona/Riverside want to educate you and your loved ones about skin cancer risks and prevention this season. Do you are your loved ones plan to catch some waves, tend the garden or enjoy a barbecue this season? Follow these CDC recommendations to protect your skin from UV radiation:

  • Stay in the shade, especially during midday hours.
  • Wear clothing that covers your arms and legs.
  • Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade your face, head, ears and neck.
  • Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block UV rays.
  • Use sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher.
  • Avoid indoor tanning.

Risk factors vary for different types of skin cancer, but some general risk factors include:

  • A lighter, natural skin color.
  • Family history of skin cancer.
  • Exposure to the sun through work and play.
  • A history of sunburns, especially early in life.
  • A history of indoor tanning.
  • Skin that burns, freckles, reddens easily or becomes painful in the sun.
  • Blue or green eyes.
  • Blonde or red hair.
  • Certain types and a large number of moles.

A change in your skin is the most common sign of skin cancer. Assess your skin using the A-B-C-D-Es of melanoma test if you feel that you or your loved one may have skin cancer.

  • “A” stands for asymmetrical. Does the mole or spot have an irregular shape with two parts that look very different?
  • “B” stands for border. Is the border irregular or jagged?
  • “C” is for color. Is the color uneven?
  • “D” is for diameter. Is the mole or spot larger than the size of a pea?
  • “E” is for evolving. Has the mole or spot changed during the past few weeks or months?

Talk to your doctor if you notice changes in your skin. Sunshine is important to your overall health – and we’re going to see a lot of it this year! Take care of your skin, and have fun in the sun!
