Flu Shots for Seniors: Why the Shot Matters-CORONA/ RIVERSIDE

On December 1, 2016, California health officials confirmed the state’s first death of this year’s flu season. The death reported was a middle-aged man in the northern part of Los Angeles County. Although the individual who passed was middle-aged, adults 65 and older are more susceptible to falling ill to the flu – between 70 percent and 85 percent of seasonal flu-related deaths are typically people 65 and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Although there’s been only one death in California so far, 11 people who became ill with the flu have ended up in hospital intensive care units since October.

Flu season runs from October through May, and typically peaks in February. If your senior parent has not received a flu vaccination this year, they are at a greater risk of suffering from serious complications from the flu, which can include:

  • Fever or feeling feverish/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Vomiting and diarrhea

The flu, at times, can lead to death. If you’re senior parent is unprotected, follow the CDC’s recommendations to ensure that your senior parent remains healthy this flu season:

  1. Get your senior parent a flu shot.
  2. Help your senior parent practice good health habits by encouraging them to cover their cough, wash their hands often and avoid people who are sick.
  3. If you notice that your senior parent has flu-like symptoms, seek medical advice immediately.
  4. Get your senior parent pneumococcal vaccines. People 65 years and older should also be up-to-date with pneumococcal vaccinations to protect against pneumococcal disease, such as pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream infections. Talk to your parent’s doctor to find out which pneumococcal vaccines are recommended.
