Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease that is the 6th leading cause of death among adults in the United States, and is the 5th leading cause of death among adults aged 65-85 years old, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Because Alzheimer’s disease affects the parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language, it’s extremely difficult for a person with Alzheimer’s disease to manage their health and wellness. If your senior parent suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, keep an eye out for these common signs of illness that often occur in Alzheimer’s patients, according to the National Institute on Aging.
If your senior parent suffering from Alzheimer’s disease has a temperature of 2 or more degrees above their normal temperature, call their primary care doctor immediately. A fever may be a sign of:
- Infection, caused by germs
- Dehydration, caused by a lack of fluids
- Heat stroke
Flu and Pneumonia
Make sure your senior parent suffering with Alzheimer’s disease receives an annual flu shot, along with a pneumonia shot once after age 65. Flu and pneumonia may cause:
- Aches and pains
- Trouble breathing
Alzheimer’s disease can make your senior parent more susceptible to falls, as those with Alzheimer’s disease may have trouble walking and keeping their balance, or they may have changes in depth perception. To reduce the chance of a fall:
- Clean up clutter
- Remove throw rugs
- Use chairs with arms
- Put grab bars in the bathroom
- Use good lighting
- Make sure your senior parent wears sturdy shoes with good traction
Signs of dehydration to look for include:
- Dry mouth
- Hallucinations (hallucinations may also be caused by Alzheimer’s disease, too)
- Rapid heart rate
This may happen at any stage of Alzheimer’s disease, but it is more often a problem in the later stages. Signs of this problem are leaking urine, problems emptying the bladder, and soiled underwear and bed sheets. Be sure to let your senior parent’s doctor know if this happens and, when you speak with their doctor, be ready to answer the following questions:
- What medicines is your senior parent taking?
- Does your senior parent leak urine when they laugh, cough or lift something?
- Does your senior parent urinate often?
- Can your senior parent get to the bathroom in time?
- Is your senior parent urinating in places other than the bathroom?
- Is your senior parent soiling their clothes or bed sheets each night?
- Do these problems happen each day or once in a while?
As Alzheimer’s disease gets worse, your senior parent may need help taking care of their teeth or dentures. Check your parent’s mouth for any problems such as:
- Decayed teeth
- Food "pocketed" in the cheek or on the roof of the mouth
