There is so much to be thankful for this November. Next week we will celebrate Thanksgiving, and this whole month we recognize caregivers. Today there are millions of Americans who care for aging loved ones, while raising their own families as well.
Those in the sandwich generation are everyday heroes. They are the ones making it possible for mom or dad to age gracefully in their own home. They can practice their independence and maintain their dignity, and most importantly, feel secure and comfortable.
No matter how much time a caregiver gives, aging individuals living at home can still experience loneliness and isolation. AARP posted an article that talked about ways caregivers can be creative about their time with their aging loved one. My favorite was the “Senior Sunday” idea. Adding this into your busy schedule each week will help ensure that the time is taken to really enjoy the time together. Additionally, sometimes a set day and time will make it easier for other family members to join in, or take a day if you simply can’t make it work.
The shopping, the decorating, the gatherings, busier times at work, all things the holiday season brings many of us. Some day we just might wish for more to do and more distractions. Keeping this in mind may help us realize just how important that movie night or lunch date is to mom. However you may choose to implement, I hope you’ll find satisfaction, fun and much warmth committing to your version of “Senior Sunday!”
