A report from the National Alliance for Caregiving says that 66 million Americans (almost one-third of the adult U.S. population) serve as family caregivers for an ill, disabled, or elderly family member. Of that 66 million, 42 million of them are balancing caregiving with their full or part-time jobs.
Family caregivers carry a great deal of stress and disruption of their own lives. Studies show that individuals caring for an aging parent without outside help often times see their own health deteriorate. This is not surprising at all to those of us in the industry, as we see daily the very real physical and emotional challenges that are faced when caregiving locally or from a distance.
The evolution of care that we are seeing today is a relief for family caregivers. Knowing that there are options other than nursing homes for an aging parent or loved one takes away a lot of guilt and stress. In-home care allows an aging individual the independence and dignity that help them continue to live their best life.
