Family

Alzheimer’s disease is a difficult process to witness. My upbeat attitude does not preclude me from seeing the suffering on the part of the family witnessing dramatic changes or the baffled individual who cannot recall what has happened during the past hour or perhaps the past 10 years. But AD should not be synonymous with “away from the mind.” I know plenty of persons with AD who are able to express love, share feelings, and have fun. They are perfectly mindful in the precise moment. Let’s explore living life at “new” normal, emphasizing what is present rather than what is lost. A life with AD is a life worth living.

As you enjoy time with your aging loved one over the holidays, or as you care for an aging client, I encourage you to really be in the moment and take it all in. In years to come it won’t be about the food, the clean house, the perfect gift. Capture the moments of memories you are making today, and document any past memories you share by having someone tell the stories on video or paper. Someday you’ll be so glad you did.

Even with the amount of time a caregiver dedicates, isolation and loneliness can set in on aging individuals living alone at home. There is an article by AARP that covered ways caregivers can be innovative and creative and get involved in making a point to have quality time with our aging family members. The article gave the idea of adding a “Senior Sunday” into the weekly schedule. This is a brilliant idea for all caregivers and family members alike to commit to spending time or doing something for a senior.

Many caregivers live in a state of hyper-vigilance for good reason, and many of them carry on as a sole provider for far too long. But what I have witnessed time and time again is a tendency to become stuck in the belief that, for example, a wife should be able to run the household as she did twenty years ago and care for her husband, or that a daughter should be able to maintain her preferred lifestyle and make everything alright for her mother. The expectations family caregivers put upon themselves may be impossible to achieve, and they may measure effectiveness on standards that may not be in the best interests of caregiver or care receiver.

Many of us baby boomers are faced with the role reversal of caring for an aging parent. Our parents were there for us, and now it’s our turn. There can be uncomfortable moments when we want to administer and facilitate the care our parents need, but we tread lightly so as not to make them feel as though they are losing independence or dignity.

The evolution of care that we are seeing today is a relief for family caregivers. Knowing that there are options other than nursing homes for an aging parent or loved one takes away a lot of guilt and stress. In-home care allows an aging individual the independence and dignity that help them continue to live their best life.

Asking questions and details about good times from their younger years could be a bonding experience, and a healthy and happy experience for the storyteller. Don’t be afraid to bring up the past with someone with dementia. If done in a comforting way with no pressure put on them, it can be an enjoyable experience that can also help the person maintain a sense of who they are.
