The month of January is precisely when blood centers need donations the most. According to the American Red Cross, our nation’s blood supply reaches a critical low during the winter months. People donate less during the holidays and colder months due to busy schedules, illness and bad weather.
Statistics show that about 35 percent of Americans are able to donate blood, but less than 10 percent actually do. It is believed that the reason for that number being so low is simple - people are not aware of the dire need for blood donations in our country. In January there are individuals and corporations everywhere doing their part in spreading awareness. We do our part at SYNERGY HomeCare by simply asking family, friends and employees to consider donating blood. Often all it takes is a reminder, or the needed knowledge and facts to call us to action.
You may not know…
- One pint of donated blood can help save the lives of up to three individuals.
- If you donate blood regularly you can help save up to eighteen lives in one year.
- Someone with life-threatening injuries from an automobile accident can require 50 or more pints of blood.
- In the U.S. around 39,000 pints of blood are needed daily to meet the given demands.
