Is it a coincidence that in February we celebrate Valentine’s Day with the symbolic heart, and it is also American Heart Month? It is a time to celebrate and recognize love, and one important way we can do that is focus on being healthy for our loved ones and ourselves.
Cardiovascular disease remains the number one cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Many of our family members, friends, employees, and in home care clients at SYNERGY HomeCare of Broomfield know this statistic all too well.
When you think of heart disease or when you hear about someone that died of a heart attack, many times those inflicted are older than 65. Many of those you hear about in the news are in their 70s or perhaps 80s. I don't know every statistic of deaths by heart attack by age group. I do know that I am 57 years old and I work hard at staying healthy by exercising and watching my diet. I look in the mirror and still see a young man. Maybe wishful thinking, but I can only stare in the mirror with disbelief when I think back to the day in 1992, when my father passed away from a heart attack. He was only 57 years old. That strikes a cord with me.
Shall I count the number of birthdays that I survive a similar fate? Probably not, since I would likely worry myself to death instead! But I stand up and take note that heart disease kills many and does not discriminate who or what age it will strike. Every year I see my doctor for a physical to monitor my blood pressure, my cholesterol, blood sugars and other chemistries. Base lining and routine monitoring in conjunction with exercise and diet helps me feel like I have some control. It is never too late to develop these habits to know the score and make a positive impact on your life.
