My “Grams” will be 90 years old this August, so first, Happy (early) Birthday, Grams! She has amazed me over the years for literally countless reasons. One thing I have always admired has been her relentless attempt at completing the crossword puzzle in the local newspaper that is delivered every day but Sunday. That’s six crossword puzzles in one week! I admire the smarts, and patience, she shows while working on them. I especially appreciate the way it brings us all together when she is asking us for answers to the ones that are “more for youngsters.”
As we age our brain’s volume gradually shrinks. A study in The New England Journal of Medicine reports that seniors who partake in activities that stimulate the brain reduce their risk of dementia by 63 percent. Add on top of that eating well and exercise and the risk decreases even more.
Have you noticed the increased marketing of brain games lately? Companies like Lumosity, Brain Pages, Posit Science (Brain HQ) and AARP are all tapping into a corner of healthcare that has not been explored as much in the past.
WebMD suggests eating a lot of fruits and vegetables to help stop the damage to brain cells. And vitamin B and the spice turmeric can help boost the strength of the brain as well. It’s never too late to take steps that will protect, exercise and stimulate your brain!
