National Nutrition Month

Created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, March is National Nutrition Month and “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right” is the theme this year.  The focus is on how to combine taste and nutrition to create healthy meals that follow the Dietary Guidelines recommendations.

For those of us in the industry of caregiving, or anyone caring for an aging loved one, we know the importance of nutrition for seniors.  The benefits of healthy eating are linked to mind, body and spirit.  Proper nutrition plays a big role in how we feel and our overall quality of life.

We always discuss nutrition and dietary restrictions with our clients.  Some we cook for, some we simply grocery shop for.  TV dinners are popular with clients who live alone.  We never force nutrition on our clients, but we have seen that when we grocery shop and/or cook for them they are eating more natural, nutritious foods.

My wife and I have four children to feed at home.  We try to educate ourselves on proper nutrition in the hopes that they will feel the benefits and live longer, healthier lives.  As with many things, it’s a work in progress.  As we find new products, new ways of cooking, and new information we also pass these learnings on to our clients.  One of our clients prefers to have bacon with every meal.  Not the most nutritious, but we can work around it!

SYNERGY HomeCare of South Denver is a proud community partner of Healthy Transitions Colorado.  We took the pledge to do our part in reducing hospital readmissions.  One of the ways we honor this pledge is by continuously working with our clients and caregivers on proper nutrition, specific to each client, to help sustain their health, and to help promote recovery after an illness strikes.
