The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. sponsors Alcohol Awareness Month every April. The goal is to increase public awareness and understanding, reduce the stigma and encourage local communities to talk about the associated issues.
We know that over time drinking too much alcohol can lead to serious health conditions. Consuming too much increases the risk for breast cancer and cancer of the mouth, esophagus, throat, colon, and liver. Studies have shown that binge drinking can also lead to high blood pressure and increase the risk for stroke and heart attack.
Research studies conducted in a Mayo Clinic have documented something called “late-onset alcoholism.” In one study 41 percent of the people age 65 and older reported that their alcohol problems started after age 60. This is not surprising as we think about the life changes that happen as we age – loss of employment, stopping driving, loss of a spouse or friend, living alone. We know that there is a strong link between depression and alcoholism.
Alcoholism in seniors often goes unnoticed by health care professionals and family members. While aging individuals are battling a number of different life changes, doctors may mis-diagnose substance abuse and explain symptoms as those of simply aging.
This is one of the many reasons we take our role very seriously when it comes to getting to know our clients. Often times we know the routines and demeanors of our clients better than their family members. As we spend time caring for our clients we are able to keep the family in the loop on anything that may come up so we can all ban together to care for the client. We strive for the health and well being of every client so they can enjoy their life at home with dignity and happiness.
