Foods That Help Improve Memory

Do you want to help your elderly loved one improve their memory? Whether they have normal age-related memory loss or early stages of dementia, you might be able to help slow things down a bit. There are certain foods that help to improve memory. If you or your loved one’s elderly care providers add these to their diet, they could improve their memory.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

The omega-3 fatty acids that are fish based are the best foods for improving memory. Adults that have higher omega-3 fatty acid levels in their blood might have a reduced risk for memory loss. Research shows that omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, seem to help reduce plaque buildup and inflammation in the brain. This helps to deter memory loss. Some of the foods that are highest in omega-3 fatty acids include trout, tuna, salmon, sardines, and mackerel.

ALA Fatty Acids

It would also be beneficial for your loved one’s memory is you add more ALA fatty acids to their diet. These are another kind of omega-3 fatty acids. They help to boost brain health and improve memory, as well. Research shows that this kind of fatty acid is particularly beneficial in improving memory and learning skills. ALA fatty acids can be found in many things including flaxseed. You can put flaxseed in your loved one’s yogurt, smoothies, scrambled eggs, baked goods, and other foods.

Ginger Root

You can also help to improve your loved one’s memory with ginger root. While this isn’t used as often as it should be in many elderly adults, it has tremendous benefits. Research shows that ginger root is helpful in boosting memory, learning skills, and brain activity. Ginger root works very similarly to Alzheimer’s medications.

Leafy Greens

Research also shows that leafy greens are beneficial to one’s memory. There are many foods, particularly spinach and kale, that have memory-boosting benefits. Studies show that Vitamin K, beta-carotene, and folate in the leafy greens are what helps to boost one’s memory. You should make sure your loved one is getting more leafy greens in their diet.

These are some of the many foods that help to improve memory. If you are trying to help your loved one with their memory, it is important that you have them eat these foods. Make these foods a regular part of your loved one’s diet.
