The Denver weather is one of the big reasons why so many people love to call it home. December has brought us some great weather so far, but we all know enough to be prepared for winter temperatures to hit at any time!
An important responsibility of caring for an aging loved one is being sure they are safe in their surroundings. With winter weather looming, here are just a few tips to keep top of mind for keeping everyone safe.
Keeping Warm. As we age our body has a more difficult time producing heat. Combine this with a weak immune system and seniors can become very susceptible to colds and pneumonia. Being prepared with proper clothing for inside and outside, as well as keeping the home at an appropriate temperature will help.
Food Storage. The colder weather can often bring power outages. Keeping food and plenty of water stored for these times could save you in a pinch. And also be sure your loved one has blankets to keep warm in case the heat goes out.
Clear Icy Spots. Seniors are at a higher risk for falls in any situation, but snow and ice can greatly increase the risk. Having a plan for immediate snow and ice removal outside of their house will help ensure safety. And it is always a good idea to physically assist them to and from the car or doorways, even if they typically don’t require assistance.
