We volunteer meals on wheels 1 day a week, and not only is it up lifting to deliver meals to seniors, but also a great opportunity to offer them words of encouragement during delivery.  A smile and a helping hand go a long way.

For many of us in the sandwich generation the hustle and bustle of the season can bring a great deal of stress and anxiety along with all of that magic.  We spend our days, weeks and months throughout the year planning and scheduling and come November and December we are desperately seeking for more hours in the day.  Raising young children and caring for our aging parents is something we do with love and honor, however, that is not to say we couldn’t all use a little help sometimes.

It’s hard to give up control when you’ve been the one caring for a loved one.  I tell our clients to think of us as a partner, an extension of their family.  Working together and keeping the lines of communication open allow all family members to release any guilt they have of not doing it all on their own.

As the daughter of an Alzheimer’s afflicted parent, I am proud of the fact that our caregivers commit to extra hours of training annually to better understand this disease. I have personally experienced the phases of Alzheimer’s with my own mom and know that knowledge is the best way to feel as if I can still make a difference in my mom’s care and quality of life by the way I approach her everyday behaviors.

Today there are almost 10 million adults over 50 that give full or part-time care to their aging parent, or parents.  And that’s just in the United States.  Studies show that those who provide care for an aging parent without outside help see their own health deteriorate.  Those stats are not a huge surprise to those of us who witness how caregiving, locally or long-distance, can be both physically and emotionally draining.

I recently read this article by Katie Couric about finding care for her elderly mom.  I found myself nodding vigorously in agreement as she voiced a frustration born out of love and concern.  The parallels are amazing.  Both of our moms are 89 and we both lost our dads within the past couple of years.  Both of us have siblings spread around the country and support each other but can't be close by to mom all the time.

One of the most common things I hear when speaking with families of our clients is how strapped for time they are, and how guilty that makes them feel when they know their aging parent needs some of their time as well.   And it’s no wonder this is so common, and not just in our Colorado community.  We are living in a time where the rush against the clock is real and fierce.  Many of us work full time and are raising our own children, and are now faced with needing to care for our parents.  It’s a task we want to take on, but where do we find the time?

Having personally experienced the progression of Alzheimer's Disease with a loved one, I am passionate about providing the protective oversight and consistent care necessary for our clients with this disease to still have quality of life. We provide 24-hour care for one of our clients who is committed to staying in his own home, but finds disruption of routine and too many new faces challenging. By providing a schedule of regular caregivers who understand his needs and behaviors at different times of the day and developing a well crafted daily schedule of activities, we have seen him take on a renewed energy and confidence that he can have independence in his own home even though we are with him all of the time.
