  • Stay away from big meals. Heavy or spicy meals can lead to sleep problems if consumed right before bedtime. This is because it could lead to indigestion or discomfort. Instead, try a small dinner at least three hours prior to bedtime.
  • Do not drink anything. Do not let your loved one drink anything before bed. This could cause your loved one to wake up several times in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Try not to consume any liquids at least one and a half hours before bedtime.

Exercising

Regular exercise can also help your loved one sleep better at night. Some of the most common exercises are:

  • Dancing
  • Swimming
  • Walking
  • Jogging
  • Bowling
  • Golfing
  • Cycling

If the senior has mobility issues, there are still a wide range of exercises they can participate. Check with their doctor and/or physical therapist to find out what exercises they can safely participate in.
