Great Tips for Getting Better Sleep at Night

Senior Care in Morrison CO

Senior Care in Morrison COA good night’s sleep is important at any age, but for seniors, getting a good night's sleep can be a challenge. Body aches and pains, restlessness, incontinence, arthritis and other physical ailments can hinder sleep patterns. With a few lifestyle changes, some of these issues can be avoided.

Here are some tips that could help your senior loved one get a more restful sleep at night:

  • Avoid caffeine at night. Eliminate caffeinated beverages late in the afternoon as it can also affect the elder’s ability to sleep at night. This includes coffee, tea, chocolate, and soda.
  • Have a snack. Another reason seniors may be waking up in the middle of the night is if they are hungry. Encourage them to have a snack before bedtime, such as cereal and milk, crackers, warm milk, and yogurt.
  • Stay away from big meals. Heavy or spicy meals can lead to sleep problems if consumed right before bedtime. This is because it could lead to indigestion or discomfort. Instead, try a small dinner at least three hours prior to bedtime.
  • Do not drink anything. Do not let your loved one drink anything before bed. This could cause your loved one to wake up several times in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Try not to consume any liquids at least one and a half hours before bedtime.

Regular exercise can also help your loved one sleep better at night. Some of the most common exercises are:

  • Dancing
  • Swimming
  • Walking
  • Jogging
  • Bowling
  • Golfing
  • Cycling

If the senior has mobility issues, there are still a wide range of exercises they can participate. Check with their doctor and/or physical therapist to find out what exercises they can safely participate in.

Insomnia can change the mood of your elderly loved one, causing them to become irritable and angry at the drop of a hat. Hopefully these tips will help you better understanding this condition and what you can to do help. Check with the elder’s doctor for more ideas on how to eliminate their insomnia.
