Smartphone Apps That Help Your Dad Stay Safe

Your dad lives alone. You're not close enough to check on him often, so you do worry about his safety. There are two ways to make sure he's safe and happy living on his own. Caregivers are one tool that makes sure he has someone to help with household chores, meals, medications, and transportation. These apps also help.

Your dad likes to go for walks. He's never been great with directions, so you do worry about him walking too far and struggling to get back home. If he's in the early stages of dementia, this risk is also very real.

With Family360, you gain GPS tracking of his phone. As long as he's carrying it with him, you can see where he is, call him, and guide him back home. You could also drive to pick him up and bring him home yourself. It's also a less invasive way to make sure he's up and moving around his house each day.

Medical ID: In Case of Emergency or ICE – In Case of Emergency

If your dad carries his phone when he walks, Medical ID or ICE are great apps to use. They're apps that anyone can access without needing his password to access his phone. Both are free. Pick your favorite and install it for him.

If he falls or is injured in some way while outside or walking, the app comes up for anyone who picks up his phone. It includes pertinent medical information like medications, allergies, and blood type and emergency contacts.

Pill Reminders

Apps like Medisafe's Pill Reminder & Medication Tracker offers daily reminders that your dad needs to take his prescriptions. It helps him track how many pills he has left so that he orders refills on time. It also reminds him of when he needs to schedule his yearly doctor's appointment. It can be shared with his doctor so that his doctor knows he's taking the medications as scheduled.

Apps help, but they're not foolproof. Caregivers are a better option as he has someone physically checking on him and helping him out. How do you arrange caregivers? Call a home care agency and answer a few questions about your dad's abilities. If he's still mobile and driving, he may not need help with errands.

He may not have any friends nearby, however, and caregivers are great companions. Companionship services, meal preparation, housekeeping, laundry, and medication reminders are all services caregivers offer.

If you or an aging loved one are considering caregivers in Evergreen, CO, please contact the caring staff at SYNERGY HomeCare West Denver. Call today: (720) 263-6060.
