Senior Care Tips: Improving Sleep for Your Elderly Loved One

Senior Care in New Haven CT

Senior Care in New Haven CTOne of the most common misconceptions about old age is that elderly adults do not need the same amount of sleep as younger people. This is often seemingly supported by the tendency of older adults getting up very early in the morning. The truth, however, is that elderly adults generally do not need any less sleep. In fact, doctors note that most people need about the same amount of sleep from the time that they are in their twenties throughout the rest of their lives.

For some seniors, however, not getting the same quality of sleep that they did when they were younger can make it so that being in bed for the same number of hours does not provide enough rest. This can make it seem like they need to sleep more in able to feel properly functional. Finding the reasons that your parent is not getting proper quality of sleep and resolving those issues can help him to live healthier and stronger throughout his later years.

Some ways that you can help your parent sleep better include:

• Consider health problems. There are a variety of health problems that can negatively impact quality of sleep. Sleep apnea and heart problems are common culprits of sleep disruption. With these issues your parent might think that he has slept all night, but the reality is that he woke up every few minutes throughout the night. Even if these periods of wakefulness are only a few seconds at a time, they break the sleep cycle. This means that the senior does not get the deep rest that he really needs.

• Create a true sleep environment. It is not uncommon for elderly adults to need to rest or relax during the day to deal with issues such as lack of mobility. If your parent needs this extra rest, however, discourage him from doing it in his bed. Performing activities such as reading, watching television, doing paperwork, or making crafts while in bed changes how the brain perceives this environment. Encouraging the mind to think of the bed as only a place where a nighttime sleep occurs will support deeper relaxation and faster sleep.

• Keep the room comfortable. Comfort is essential for truly restorative sleep. Take the time to make sure that your parent's bed is designed for this comfort. Make it with soft, clean sheets and blankets and ensure that the pillows are the proper level of support for your parent's particular needs. It is also important to make sure that the room is kept at a proper temperature. A room that is too warm will make sleeping difficult and diminish quality of sleep. A cool room and plenty of blankets is better for supporting deep, lasting sleep.

• Create a routine. You likely had a bedtime routine with your children when they were young. While many people think of this as something for children, it is actually effective for everyone. Establishing a routine helps to create a conditioned response that relaxes your mind and encourages you to fall asleep more easily and stay asleep longer. This routine can include taking a shower, changing into pajamas, having a snack, brushing teeth, and spending some time reading before going to bed.

Welcome to SYNERGY HomeCare of East Haven, CT. We are an agency that provides non-medical services such as companion care, homemaking, personal care , and respite care to individuals of all age groups. Our mission is to assist individuals to reach the maximum amount of independence they can achieve, and to improve the quality of life for those that are experiencing physical or mental disabilities. These disabilities may include, but are not limited to, stroke, Alzheimer's or other dementias, Parkinson’s disease, or cancer.

Hello, my name is Gordon Wall and I am the President and owner of SYNERGY HomeCare of East Haven, Ct. My wife and I have been in the medical field for 35 years as I am a Registered Pharmacist and my wife a Registered Nurse. Although SYNERGY HomeCare is a non-medical agency, together we have a long history of medical expertise that is beneficial in providing homecare services.

We understand the challenges, both physically and mentally, that are involved in caring for aging parents, as we have had our own personal experiences, and are aware of the demands it places on family members as they endeavor to maintain their own household/lives. We are very passionate about maintaining the integrity of the workers and the dignity of the clients. We strive to make aging and healing a beautiful part of life and realize the importance of staying in ones home to achieve this. Whatever age requires the service.....'There is no place like home'.

We specially train our caregivers/CNA's to meet the individualized needs per diagnosis. We instill in them the importance of treating each person with respect, compassion, and having empathy with their client. Each caregiver/CNA is CPR certified, they have evidence of negative TB testing, they are fully insured and a national criminal background check is performed. My wife works with each caregiver clinically before they are assigned to a client. Once assigned to a client, quality calls and visits are conducted to make sure the client/family is satisfied with the care they are receiving with their caregiver(s). There are times when a client is receiving medical care. We also can work side by side with a medical team in providing additional non-medical care.
