Elder Care Safety: Staying Safe during Wet Weather

Elder Care in East Haven CT

Elder Care in East Haven CTThe summer is right around the corner. While this means many wonderful things like long leisurely evenings, twinkling fireflies, and plenty of cookouts and gatherings, it also means the return of summer storms. These rainy occasions can out your elderly parent at risk, so it is important that you take the proper precautions to keep them safe.

Use these tips to help keep your aging parent safe during the wet weather this summer:

• Drive carefully. Rainy conditions mean reduced visibility and slippery roads. If your elderly parent is driving or in a vehicle, make sure that all proper safety measures are utilized. This includes ensuring the vehicle is in good condition, using the headlights at all times, and driving slowly.

• Wear proper shoes. Rainy weather can be treacherous even when they are not outside. As soon as they step inside, they could find themselves slipping and sliding, potentially causing a dangerous fall. If your senior is going to go outside when it is raining, make sure that they are wearing the proper shoes. These should have reliable traction and fit well so that they are not going to slide. This will help them to maintain their grip when they are walking outside as well as when they come back inside. Ideally, they should remove their shoes as soon as they get inside the house to prevent slips, but if that is not possible, having properly chosen shoes will reduce the risk.

• Never step into moving water. If the rain is extreme and there is flooding, one of the most important rules of safety is to never touch or step into moving water. Even if the water does not seem deep, you should not allow your parent near it. Water moves much faster than it appears to and is extremely strong. Floodwaters that are deep can also contain potentially dangerous debris that can cause injury when rushing by. If there is moving water near the home, instruct your parent to call for help rather than trying to traverse the water.

• Prepare for a power outage. Often people associate power outages only with very severe weather situations such as thunderstorms, hurricanes, or tornadoes. The reality is, however, that even seemly mild rainy weather can lead to a power outage. Cars running off of the road in the slippery conditions and hitting a transformer, lightning, and even high heat and humidity can lead to sudden outages. It is important that your parent is fully prepared for this potential event. This means packing an emergency supply kit, having adequate means of communication, and preparing your parent for the possibility of an outage when you or their elderly health care services provider is not in the home.

An elder care provider can be an incredible resource for your aging parent on many levels. One is helping to keep them safe. For seniors who are dealing with mobility or balance issues, a home care provider can provide assistance that protects your loved one while also encouraging greater independence.

Welcome to SYNERGY HomeCare of East Haven, CT. We are an agency that provides non-medical services such as companion care, homemaking, personal care , and respite care to individuals of all age groups. Our mission is to assist individuals to reach the maximum amount of independence they can achieve, and to improve the quality of life for those that are experiencing physical or mental disabilities. These disabilities may include, but are not limited to, stroke, Alzheimer's or other dementias, Parkinson’s disease, or cancer.

Hello, my name is Gordon Wall and I am the President and owner of SYNERGY HomeCare of East Haven, Ct. My wife and I have been in the medical field for 35 years as I am a Registered Pharmacist and my wife a Registered Nurse. Although SYNERGY HomeCare is a non-medical agency, together we have a long history of medical expertise that is beneficial in providing homecare services.

We understand the challenges, both physically and mentally, that are involved in caring for aging parents, as we have had our own personal experiences, and are aware of the demands it places on family members as they endeavor to maintain their own household/lives. We are very passionate about maintaining the integrity of the workers and the dignity of the clients. We strive to make aging and healing a beautiful part of life and realize the importance of staying in ones home to achieve this. Whatever age requires the service.....'There is no place like home'.

We specially train our caregivers/CNA's to meet the individualized needs per diagnosis. We instill in them the importance of treating each person with respect, compassion, and having empathy with their client. Each caregiver/CNA is CPR certified, they have evidence of negative TB testing, they are fully insured and a national criminal background check is performed. My wife works with each caregiver clinically before they are assigned to a client. Once assigned to a client, quality calls and visits are conducted to make sure the client/family is satisfied with the care they are receiving with their caregiver(s). There are times when a client is receiving medical care. We also can work side by side with a medical team in providing additional non-medical care.

As SYNERGY HomeCare of East Haven our service area consists of New Haven, East Haven, Branford, North Branford, Guilford, Madison, Northford, Wallingford, and Durham.
