Helping Your Aging Loved One Cope with Insomnia

Home Care in Guilford CT

Home Care in Guilford CTApproximately 30 percent of the senior adult population throughout the United States suffers from some form of sleep disruption or sleep disorder that can be described as insomnia. This might be struggling to fall asleep at night, not being able to sleep through the night, having periods of apnea, or waking too early and not being able to get back to sleep. However it manifests, if insomnia is something that your aging parent deals with regularly, it could make a serious negative impact on their health and wellbeing. Helping them to manage it can get them into healthier sleep patterns that promote better immune health, less stress, and overall improved physical and mental condition.

Use these tips to help your loved one cope with insomnia:

  • Consider health issues. If your parent has suddenly started suffering from insomnia, it is important to rule out any serious health issues that may be causing the changes. Schedule a time to talk with their doctor about the changes in their sleep patterns so that you can ensure their health is not the cause of the problems. If there is a health issue at play the doctor can make recommendations for treatment and management.

  • Make the bedroom sleep. The bedroom should be a place that is set aside specifically for sleeping or recovering from illness or injury. It should not become a place for all types of functions of life. Discourage your parent from eating, doing crafts, watching television, paying bills, talking on the phone, or doing anything else in their bedroom, particularly in their bed. By limiting their activities in their bed to sleeping and resting, your parent can train their mind to relax and start toward sleep as soon as they get into bed.

  • Make the room more conducive to sleep. In addition to only using the bedroom for sleep, it is important that the room itself be primed for relaxation. Choose colors for the floor, walls, décor, and bedding that are calming and relaxing rather than stimulating. Remove excess pictures, knick-knacks, and other clutter that can create a chaotic environment. Make the space as dark as possible, including removing or turning clocks that glow. Consider adding a fan or sound machine that can produce a more relaxing, restful environment.

  • Create a routine. Work with your parent to establish a routine that helps them to relax at night. This can be taking a bath, changing into clean pajamas, reading for half an hour, and then listening to their sound machine as they go to sleep, or any combination of activities that promotes calm and eases your parent to sleep.

If your aging parent is suffering from serious insomnia or has been demonstrating potentially dangerous behaviors when awake at night such as falling out of the bed, wandering, or attempting to cook, now may be the ideal time for you to consider home care. An in-home senior care services provider can be in the home awake and alert throughout the night so that your parent has the proper care and supervision when they are awake. It is important to remember that issues such as low vision, dementia, and balance problems tend to be more severe at night and during periods of sleep deprivation. This could put your parent at even greater risk of injury or other issues if they are left alone at night. Having home care with them can not only help keep them safer and more secure when they are struggling with their insomnia, but can also help them find ways to manage their insomnia that might get them better sleep. With this care you can focus on getting the sleep that you need to be healthy, strong, and at your best each day.

Welcome to SYNERGY HomeCare of East Haven, CT. We are an agency that provides non-medical services such as companion care, homemaking, personal care , and respite care to individuals of all age groups. Our mission is to assist individuals to reach the maximum amount of independence they can achieve, and to improve the quality of life for those that are experiencing physical or mental disabilities. These disabilities may include, but are not limited to, stroke, Alzheimer's or other dementias, Parkinson’s disease, or cancer.

Hello, my name is Gordon Wall and I am the President and owner of SYNERGY HomeCare of East Haven, Ct. My wife and I have been in the medical field for 35 years as I am a Registered Pharmacist and my wife a Registered Nurse. Although SYNERGY HomeCare is a non-medical agency, together we have a long history of medical expertise that is beneficial in providing homecare services.

We understand the challenges, both physically and mentally, that are involved in caring for aging parents, as we have had our own personal experiences, and are aware of the demands it places on family members as they endeavor to maintain their own household/lives. We are very passionate about maintaining the integrity of the workers and the dignity of the clients. We strive to make aging and healing a beautiful part of life and realize the importance of staying in ones home to achieve this. Whatever age requires the service.....'There is no place like home'.

We specially train our caregivers/CNA's to meet the individualized needs per diagnosis. We instill in them the importance of treating each person with respect, compassion, and having empathy with their client. Each caregiver/CNA is CPR certified, they have evidence of negative TB testing, they are fully insured and a national criminal background check is performed. My wife works with each caregiver clinically before they are assigned to a client. Once assigned to a client, quality calls and visits are conducted to make sure the client/family is satisfied with the care they are receiving with their caregiver(s). There are times when a client is receiving medical care. We also can work side by side with a medical team in providing additional non-medical care.

As SYNERGY HomeCare of East Haven our service area consists of New Haven, East Haven, Branford, North Branford, Guilford, Madison, Northford, Wallingford, and Durham.
