6 Outdoor Activities Seniors Can Enjoy

Caregivers in Madison CT

Caregivers in Madison CTThe warm summer days are quickly coming to an end, so it is important to get out and enjoy the sunny weather while you still can. Elderly adults should also take part in outdoor activities in order to get some fresh air, a little bit of exercise, and a change of scenery after being cooped up in a house all day. If your elderly loved one has mobility issues or other health problems that deter them from wanting to head outside, there are plenty of activities that can be done, no matter what their health status is.

With their caregivers’ assistance and these 6 activities, your loved one will be able to enjoy their remaining summer days while it is still warm enough to do so.

  • Garden: Gardening is not only a great way to beautify the elder’s yard, but can also be an excellent cardiovascular workout. With all of the squatting, bending over, lifting, and digging, the elder will be getting exercise without even realizing it.
  • Board games: Who says board games can only be played inside? Either set up a blanket on the lawn or use a picnic table at the park and play any game your loved one wants. Card games can also be played outside.
  • Walk: Walking has a number of benefits. It can increase the senior’s mood, help them manage their weight, and revitalize their mind. Instead of sticking to the same boring walkway, change up your route by trying a new path with new scenery to admire.
  • Yoga: Yoga alone can increase the elder’s flexibility, improve their balance, and reduce their stress levels. Encourage them to take their yoga mat outside, where they can listen to the sounds of nature while doing these gentle exercises.
  • Local events: For most cities, the summer months are filled with outdoor events that residents can partake in. These events could be concerts, farmers’ markets, or fairs. Whatever your loved one may be interested in, try to make time to go to that event. This information is usually available on the city’s website or through senior and community centers.
  • Outdoor art: If your elderly parent enjoys painting, then they would probably love to paint something from nature. Set up their canvas and art supplies outside, where they can be inspired by all of the natural scenery that is surrounding them.

The elder will be more inclined to spend time outside if they have someone to do it with. Either you, other family members, or an in-home care provider can encourage the senior to participate in some of these activities before the weather begins to turn.

Welcome to SYNERGY HomeCare of East Haven, CT. We are an agency that provides non-medical services such as companion care, homemaking, personal care , and respite care to individuals of all age groups. Our mission is to assist individuals to reach the maximum amount of independence they can achieve, and to improve the quality of life for those that are experiencing physical or mental disabilities. These disabilities may include, but are not limited to, stroke, Alzheimer's or other dementias, Parkinson’s disease, or cancer.

Hello, my name is Gordon Wall and I am the President and owner of SYNERGY HomeCare of East Haven, Ct. My wife and I have been in the medical field for 35 years as I am a Registered Pharmacist and my wife a Registered Nurse. Although SYNERGY HomeCare is a non-medical agency, together we have a long history of medical expertise that is beneficial in providing homecare services.

We understand the challenges, both physically and mentally, that are involved in caring for aging parents, as we have had our own personal experiences, and are aware of the demands it places on family members as they endeavor to maintain their own household/lives. We are very passionate about maintaining the integrity of the workers and the dignity of the clients. We strive to make aging and healing a beautiful part of life and realize the importance of staying in ones home to achieve this. Whatever age requires the service.....'There is no place like home'.

We specially train our caregivers/CNA's to meet the individualized needs per diagnosis. We instill in them the importance of treating each person with respect, compassion, and having empathy with their client. Each caregiver/CNA is CPR certified, they have evidence of negative TB testing, they are fully insured and a national criminal background check is performed. My wife works with each caregiver clinically before they are assigned to a client. Once assigned to a client, quality calls and visits are conducted to make sure the client/family is satisfied with the care they are receiving with their caregiver(s). There are times when a client is receiving medical care. We also can work side by side with a medical team in providing additional non-medical care.

As SYNERGY HomeCare of East Haven our service area consists of New Haven, East Haven, Branford, North Branford, Guilford, Madison, Northford, Wallingford, and Durham.
