Look at Your Current Schedule and Determine What Needs to Go
Almost everyone has some items in their daily schedule that no longer serve them or that otherwise need to go. Perhaps there are some tasks that you can delegate to someone else or there are activities that you really don't enjoy. Look at what commitments you can step away from and then do so. You'll have freed up more time than you think.
Put in Your "Must Dos"
When you go to make your new schedule, start by putting in your "must dos." These are the tasks, activities, and events that you absolutely must do. For best results, start with the must dos that have a set date and time associated with them and then fill in the ones that you can do at any time.
Start out with Smaller Expectations
You're just starting out with adding time for yourself into your schedule, so you don't want to overextend yourself right out of the gate. Start slowly and with smaller expectations. Initially, pencil in a 10 minute break each day. Gradually increase that time or add in additional breaks. But starting out slowly and not expecting everything all at once will help you stick with this new way of thinking about your time.
Make the Break Just That—A Break
When you do take a break now, do you find that you're often doing something else as well, such as folding laundry or making a quick phone call to sort out a problem? That's not a break. A break means that you're doing something for yourself, such as meditating or enjoying a cup of tea or a good book. Your break should be a few moments away from the things that you are otherwise doing.
Give Yourself Big and Small Breaks
As you gain more experience in mastering your time, add in both longer and shorter breaks to maximize your time to yourself. You might include a full afternoon off once a week, for example, on the days that your loved one's senior care providers stop in. Play with the timing to figure out what works best for you.
As you become more adept at making sure your time is better utilized, including time off for yourself, it becomes easier to keep scheduling your time.
