5 Tips for Helping Your Elderly Loved One to Deal with Stress

Senior Care in Stratford, CT

Senior-Care-in-Stratford-CTStress can lead to other health problems for your elderly loved one, including overeating, insomnia, and a weakened immune system. It's important to find ways to help your loved one to deal with stress so that it doesn't take a toll on her.

Hobbies

Hobbies are a wonderful way for your elderly loved one to think about other things besides what might be causing them stress. No hobby is too small, either. If it's something that your loved one enjoys doing, even if it's as simple as coloring with adult coloring pages or attending a monthly book club.

Socialization

The other wonderful thing about hobbies is that they give your loved one a chance to socialize with other people. Family members get busy and aren't always able to spend as much time with your loved one as they might want. Being able to spend time with other people who have similar interests helps to keep your loved one from isolating and spending too much time alone. Another option is to find elderly care providers who are skilled in offering companion care services.

Meditation

Meditation is extremely calming, and some people find it to be a wonderful way to start or to end their day. Many people fear that meditation is too complicated for them to learn, but it's far easier than it seems. Your loved one also doesn't have to meditate for hours at a time in order to reap the benefits. Just a few minutes each day is all that it takes to start feeling less stressed.

Exercise

Exercise has so many benefits for your elderly loved one. It can help her to maintain a healthy weight, but it can also offer quite a few benefits to relieve stress. Even if your loved one hasn't ever exercised before, gentle exercises such as yoga, stretching, or just taking a daily walk can all do the trick. Make sure that you talk to your elderly loved one's doctor before beginning any exercise program to make sure that it's right for her.

Practicing Gratitude

Practicing gratitude at any age is a reminder of how much there is to be positive about in life. Help your loved one to start a simple gratitude journal. Some people find that they only need to write a few words each day, while others enjoy writing longer journal entries about the events during the day that made them feel grateful.

If your loved one is experiencing severe stress, talk to her doctor to determine what else can help her.
