The Importance of Early Colon Cancer Screenings for Seniors

Senior Care in Green Farms, CT - March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Senior Care in Green Farms, CT Cancer is one of those words that nobody ever really wants to hear, especially as it relates to themselves or a family member. However, cancer affects millions of people every single year throughout the United States, either by being diagnosed with some form of it or having a family member or friend who has. It is estimated that there will be over 1.6 milion cancer diagnoses in the U.S. in 2015. (Source)

The earlier a person is screened and cancer is detected in their body, the greater their chances are of overcoming it. This is true for any age group, including those who may require senior care at this time. One of the most lethal forms of cancer is colorectal cancer.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and having a colonoscopy on a regular basis is one of the most effective ways at detecting this particular type of cancer. It is also one of the best ways to lead to treatment options that can help the senior overcome this disease.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer -related deaths in the United States, according to Cancer.gov. There are numerous risk factors involved in it, and the most significant has to deal with age. The risk of contracting colorectal cancer increases when a person is over the age of 50.

There are certain concerns that people may have with regard to a colonoscopy, especially the risk of sepsis, which is a condition that can occur when bacteria from the rectum or large intestine gets into the bloodstream in the event that the colon is pierced during the procedure, but those risk factors are far outweighed by the benefits of the procedure at detecting this very serious condition early on.

Once a person is 50 years old, it is recommended that they get a colonoscopy at least every couple of years. For seniors, their doctor may recommend screening every year, especially if they are at an increased risk of contracting this form of cancer. Family history is also going to impact the risk factors.

Below are some potential signs and symptoms that a person may be dealing with this type of cancer, and any of these symptoms should be encouragement enough for a senior to seek the opinion of their primary care physician.

Potential signs and symptoms of colon cancer:

  • Persistent abdominal discomfort, which could be associated with cramps, gas, and other general pains.
  • Weakness or fatigue.
  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • After going to the bathroom, feeling as though the bowel is not completely empty.
  • Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding.
