How Stroke Recovery May Improve Through Home Care

Home Care in Greens Farms, CT

Home Care in Greens Farms CTEven though these stories don’t make the news very often, there are many tales of seniors who suffered from mild, moderate, and even severe strokes, whose family and sometimes even the doctors didn’t think they would be able to walk again, who eventually regained mobility in their body and got back to enjoying the things that mattered most in life.

Those aren’t necessarily miracles; they are more likely the result of hard work, determination, and getting the right type of home care. May is Strike Out Strokes Month and while this highlights prevention rather than recovery, we felt it important to discuss recovery from a stroke for those who have experienced it or who have a loved one who is in the hospital following a stroke.

Prospects.

While only a doctor can really provide proper diagnosis and prognosis for long-term recovery, there is always a degree of recovery involved in the months ahead. That recovery could lead to limited mobility, the ability to say a few words once again, learning new ways to communicate, and much more.

Eventually the senior may be released from the hospital and sent home. They may be discharged to a nursing home for a few weeks before returning home, but once that level of care is no longer necessary, it’s essential that the senior gets the right support system within their own home environment.

The prospects for recovery depend on the individual and the type of care they receive at home.

A comfortable environment.

Some families make a common mistake of encouraging their elderly loved one to move in with them, at least while they recover from the stroke. This isn’t going to be the most comfortable environment for them, unless they have lived in that house for a long time.

It’s best to encourage the senior to remain where they are most comfortable. If that’s at home, in an apartment, house, townhome, or some other domicile, that’s where they should be.

Family, friends, and neighbors often step up to assist the senior once they are ready to come home. Eventually, though, this level of care and assistance will begin to diminish as people have other responsibilities in their life. Experienced caregivers, especially those hired through a local home care agency, offer the best opportunity for somebody to recover from a stroke.

Does that mean the person will definitely regain all mobility? No. Does it mean they will regain a high quality of life, similar to what they knew before? Not necessarily. Quality of life is defined differently for everyone, but experienced caregivers will help the senior focus on the best care, getting the right level of exercise and fitness, and following doctor’s recommendations as closely as possible. That’s what maximizes the chances of making a full recovery following a stroke.
