Making Simple Changes Around Your House to Help Ease Caregiver Stress

Caregivers in Stratford, CT

Caregivers in Stratford CTEasing caregiver stress is one of the most important things you can do to take care of your physical, mental, and emotional health as you go through your caregiver journey with your elderly loved ones. While coping with stress is just a part of handling the needs of your aging adults, making simple changes throughout your home can help you create a more calming, peaceful, and controlled environment where you can feel at ease and secure. This releases tension, promotes true relaxation, and allows you to take your mind off of your stress and put it on spending time with your spouse, your children, your pets, and your favorite activities while you are at home.

Try some of these simple changes you can make throughout your house to help you ease your caregiver stress while you are at home:

• Closet aromatherapy. Make every time you open your closet a wonderful experience with some simple aromatherapy. Use padded hangers filled with potpourri, tuck cloths embedded with essential oils under sheets, and use moisture-absorbing solids to prevent dampness and dank smells.

• Darker sleep environment. Your body uses light to trigger wakefulness, meaning if there is too much light coming into your bedroom at night, you are not going to get the deep, high-quality sleep you need to truly restore and refresh your body. Even things like streetlights, the moon, and lights from neighboring houses can create a problem. Prevent this by installing blackout curtains over your bedroom windows. These lock out all light and offer the additional benefit of keeping out radiant heat, keeping your bedroom dark and cool, both of which are necessary for good sleep.

• Healthier air. The quality of the air in your home makes a tremendous difference in your level of stress. High humidity levels in your home during the summer months make the air feel hot, damp, and heavy, making you uncomfortable even at appropriate temperature levels. Air from a dirty duct system may also contain dust, dirt, and allergens that irritate your sinuses and cause headaches. Keep the air in your home healthier and more comfortable by having your air duct system professionally cleaned and using a dehumidifier to remove the excess moisture in the air.

• Calm colors. Even if you are a great lover of bright colors and patterns, make sure there is at least one room in your home, preferably the bedroom, that is decorated in calming colors such as white, cream, beige, pastel blue, and peach. If you want patterns, look for tone-on-tone patterns such as stripes that are soothing and pleasing to the eye.

• Scent memory. Scent is a powerful sense that connects strongly with memory and emotion. Find a scent that brings good memories and emotions and use that scent as the signature of your home. This can be the fresh scent of clean linen because it reminds you of how your grandmother's sheets smelled after drying in the sun, apple pie because it makes you feel nostalgic and homey, or a floral scent that reminds you of your wedding. Choose something that will automatically make you feel happier as soon as you step inside and use it to create a layered scent environment with scented candles, diffusers, and sprays.
