4 Tips for Communicating with Your Elderly Loved One

Elder Care in Greens Farms CT

Elder Care in Greens Farms CTCommunicating with your elderly loved one can become difficult for a variety of reasons. Chronic pain can make someone easily irritated or she may have difficulty hearing or expressing her needs and wants. Regardless of the cause, there are some things that you can do on your end that can help to make communicating with your elderly loved one a little bit easier for both of you.
Get Her Attention First
Make sure that you gain your loved one's attention before you continue on with whatever you're trying to communicate to her. If you don't have her attention first, she won't necessarily hear or understand what you're trying to convey. Eye contact is usually the first form of attention, but your loved one may need more than that. Try getting down on her level and gently touching her so that she can focus on what you're saying.
Limit Sentences to One Idea at a Time for Simplicity
When you're trying to put everything that you need to say into one sentence, the majority of that information may be lost for your loved one. Try limiting what you're saying to one sentence at a time and confirm your loved one's response after you ask a question. This can help to eliminate communication errors on both sides of the equation.
Gesturing at the Same Time Can Help
When you're asking your loved one her preference on something or simply trying to meet a need, try gesturing to the item or situation in question. This can help make sure that you're both on the same page, especially if your loved one has aphasia, or difficulty finding the right word.
Learn When to Back Off
There may be times when your loved one just doesn't want to communicate with you on any level. It's important that you learn those signs so that the situation doesn't escalate to one in which either of you become angry with the other. Your loved one may be tired or frustrated and a break can really help both of you to recover. Try again later and don't take any of those problems personally.
