Home Care Services in New Canaan, CT - Multiple Pets can pose Problems for Both Caregivers and Seniors
Penny was 85 years old and didn’t have any family living in the area. Her best friend lived next door and recognized the fact that she was struggling at home. Her best friend mentioned that she should consider hiring home care services, but there was an issue for both of them: Penny had a lot of pets.
Many people in the neighborhood referred to her as the proverbial “crazy cat lady,” but she also had ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, and numerous other pets. She had just about anything you could possibly think about with regard to domestic animals aside from dogs.
This was going to complicate home healthcare services because not only was this a potentially dangerous situation, it was unsanitary and it was going to require some changes on Penny’s part.
Discussing options with Penny.
Penny called a couple of agencies in the area when her friend was sitting with her. She explained the situation as best she could, and with some prodding from her best friend, she admitted to having all of these pets. One particular home care agency said that they would not be able to provide her assistance unless she made accommodations to move those pets to another location. They said that one or two cats was okay and that they would have a caregiver who could work with her, but having more than a dozen cats, five ferrets, three hamsters, into guinea pigs, it was simply too much.
Another home care agency asked Penny about how she took care of these pets. She said that she did the best that she could, but she could no longer really keep up with all of their demands and needs. The ferret cage, the hamster aquarium, and even the guinea pig cage were getting in poor shape. The cat litter box was also an issue with more than 12 cats.
Penny didn’t want to think about giving up any of her beloved animals, but the more she struggled to take care of herself, and them, she began to accept the fact that she simply couldn’t do it anymore. With the help of her best friend, they found good homes for most of her beloved pets. She kept two cats in this provided her an opportunity to hire home care services.
Having pets can be incredibly beneficial for elderly individuals, but having too many will not only place the senior at risk, it can also place the animals in danger as well.
