Home Care Services in Greenwich, CT - Here are some Ideas for Approaching a Tender Subject
At 81 years of age, Kathy's father has been dealing with a number of health challenges. When he compares his situation to some of his friends who can still drive, play golf, and do other things, he gets jealous, angry, and bitter. Kathy has done a lot to support him over the years since her mother died, but the older he gets, the more help he needs, and Kathy is beginning to feel the pressure to be his full-time caregiver.
Kathy knew that home care services was going to be necessary, but she had to develop the right approach to discussing it with him. Her father was not the easiest person to approach, however. Kathy utilized some of these tips to broach the subject of home care services with her father:
1. Focus on the things that matter most. Whenever you’re going to discuss the prospect of hiring an in-home care service provider for a loved one, it’s best to not just come out and say so if you know they’re going to be against the idea.
Instead, focus on what’s most important to them. For Kathy's father, it was the prospect of being able to do some of the things he was missing out on, things that his friends were still enjoying.
2. Be positive. For a senior who is struggling with their basic care, depression can be common. They may see the future as being a dark drain that is slowly (or quickly) devouring the best of them.
Help them focus on the positive aspects of life and all of the incredible things they could still enjoy, if they only had the right support system (ie., an in-home care service provider).
3. Advise them you will support them in whatever decision they make. This doesn’t mean you’re going to quit your job, drop everything you do, and be there for them at all hours of the day and night. It means you’ll support their decision whether they agree to hire home care services or not.
If you argue with the senior who is against the idea, it’s only going to strengthen their resolve. Sometimes they want the fight just to feel like they still control something. Show them they do, that there will be no argument from you, and more often than not he or she will realize home care services is actually a pretty good idea.
