What You Should Know About Rheumatoid Arthritis

Caregivers in Greenwich, CT – Get the Facts on this Common and Often Debilitating Joint Condition

Caregivers in Greenwich, CTThere are over 100 types of arthritis and a common form is called rheumatoid arthritis or RA for short. RA is what is known as an autoimmune disease. A person’s immune system attacks their body’s own tissue which causes inflammation, pain, stiffness in joints and redness of the affected joint areas. RA is also a systemic disease so it can cause extreme pain in other areas of the body such as ligaments, tendons and muscles. The inflammation results in damaged cartilage and bone within the joints. When RA strikes, a person may feel fatigued, sick or have difficulty moving their joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition that does not affect people the same way. Some people can experience mild symptoms while others’ symptoms are more severe. It is usually found in the hands and feet but in some people it can move to their ankles, hips, knees and shoulders. It is a condition that tends to affect women more so than men and unfortunately, can strike a person while they are in the prime of their life. The effects of rheumatoid arthritis have also been known to cause mental health issues such as:

  • Anxiety attacks or feelings of depression
  • Having low self-esteem
  • Feelings of helplessness
If you think you have RA, it is important to be diagnosed by your doctor. The doctor may conduct a series of X-rays, tests and examination of the joints to make a proper diagnosis. While there is no known cure for rheumatoid arthritis, a person can have long periods of remission and no symptoms. When the symptoms start again, this is called a flare-up. Sometimes people who have severe rheumatoid arthritis won’t have any episodes of remission and must contend with this disease on a daily basis; it often leads to severe joint damage. There is treatment available including:
  • Medications to reduce the pain and inflammation
  • Medications to help reduce damage to the joints
  • Doctors encourage their patients to get plenty of rest and low impact exercise such as swimming
  • Taking Vitamin D and Calcium supplements may help
If you or any member of your family is displaying some of the symptoms of RA, get checked by a doctor as soon as possible. Early treatment leads to better outcomes.

Do you find your elderly parent is calling you more often than usual? Does he need you to come over on a daily basis to give him some help with daily tasks? It’s difficult to juggle many things at one time, like family, work and caregiving. Consider hiring a home care provider to help you out with your elderly loved one.
