Relying on senior care for some may seem as though it’s a sign that they’re losing their independence. Some elderly patients believe that when senior home services begins working with them, it means that they have to accept whatever they say and that they don’t have a voice of their own.
This is completely not true, but it is too often a default reaction of the elderly patient. Whether you are relying on senior care or know someone who is and you believe that your voice is not being heard, it is time to reclaim it and your voice so that you can make the most out of senior home services.
Make sure that the caregiver hears you.
When life is hectic, it can be difficult to get someone’s attention. Yet there are usually plenty of opportunities to get the caregiver’s attention when they are at your home.
This could be during an activity that you share with them, such as preparing a meal or doing some light housekeeping. It could be while they are assisting you in the bathroom or taking a shower. It could even be when they are helping you get ready in the morning or getting undressed for bed.
No matter when it is, when it is quiet, make sure that they stop and listen to you.
Write a note if you have to.
Sometimes people will tune out others who are trying to say something to them, either because they don’t think it’s important or because they have other things on their mind, but when that happens, your voice is not being heard.
Sometimes writing a note will force the senior home services provider to actually pay attention to what you are trying to say.
Consider hiring a new senior care provider.
Silence may be deemed as golden for some, but it is not when it is forced upon you. If you feel that, no matter what you do, the senior care provider is not listening to what you have to say, then it may be time to find someone else.
Even if this is a family member caring for you, you need to be firm and tell them that if they don’t listen you will have to find somebody else.
Senior home services is designed to provide support and assistance for an elderly patient. It is not meant to suppress their voice, opinions, or anything they have to say.
