Home Care Services in Stamford, CT - Your Loved One May Still Need Help While You are at Work
One of the main reasons why I had my mother move in with me was so that I could care for her. At first, she was reluctant to pack up and move more than an hour away from her home, but she understood that she couldn’t care for herself properly any longer.
I simply assumed that once she moved then everything would be okay. I would be able to help clean her room and do her laundry and do other things that she could no longer do safely, but I have begun to realize that home care services may still be necessary.
A full-time job.
What I didn’t realize when it came to caring for my mother was that it is, essentially, a full-time job. I already have a full-time job that actually consumes 50 or more hours of my life every week. I come home tired and have to tend to numerous things that my mother requires. Even have to wake up in the morning earlier and earlier just to make sure that she has the things she needs.
During the day, I find I am easily distracted at work worrying about my mother. She never lived in the house with me so she is not familiar with where everything is. At times, I would come home and find her rooting through the cabinets trying to find a certain pot or pan to make lunch. This happens to be at six or 7 o’clock in the evening.
What I am not sure about now, though, is whether home care services should even be necessary at this point. Shouldn’t I be able to take care of her well enough because she moved in with me?
I started asking this question to various coworkers and friends and what they told me was actually a bit surprising.
One friend told me that she had her mother move in with her years ago so that she could take care of her. She found out that this was going to require a significant amount of her time, something she had been unprepared for.
She said that she talked to her mother about hiring an in-home care service provider during the day when she was at work. Her mother was reluctant, just as my mother is, but when she told her mother about the toll it was taking on her, she realized that having a professional in-home care service provider working with her would not only help her stay safe, but that it would allow her own daughter the time she needed to take care of things.
I talked to my mother about this and received a similar amount of resistance, but I’m sure we will work out something so that we hire home care services for her.
