What Seniors Can do to Stay Safe
A study conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that of all heat-related deaths in a year, roughly 40% are adults who are 65 and over. This number is very alarming and should not be taken lightly. There are plenty of precautions that can be taken for elders receiving in-home care.
Stay Hydrated: Aging adults are more susceptible to getting dehydrated because their bodies do not conserve water as well as the younger generations, causing them to lose a great deal of water in their bodies as they sweat. As dehydration occurs, the senior will also lose their ability to recognize when they are thirsty and need a hydrating drink. Especially when planning an outing, where a long period of time will be spent outside, plenty of water should be drank often. Even when they do not feel thirsty, drinking plenty of water throughout the day will keep dehydration away for an enjoyable day.
Wear Sunscreen: Sunscreen is important for people of all ages, especially the elderly and children. In order to prevent sunburns, sunscreen should be applied before going outside and frequently thereafter. The caregiver or a family member may need to remind the senior when it is time to reapply the sunscreen.
Limit Outdoor Activity: This rule is especially important during the hottest times of the day. If possible, either go outside early in the morning or in the evening because these will be the times of day that will be the coolest.
Wear Light Clothing: The right clothing will keep them cool, such as cotton or other natural fabrics. Also, clothes that are light in color and are loose-fitting will also help the elder stay cool in the summer heat.
Keep Your Eyes Protected: With the loss of eyesight being a common problem among the aging population, keeping the eyes protected will prevent any further damage from occurring to the retinas. Sunglasses should be worn at all times to protect their eyes from harmful UV rays.
Know When There is a Problem: Knowing when there is a health problem that needs immediate attention could be life-saving. As the caregiver, if you notice any of the following symptoms, it is time to head inside and call the doctor:
- Flush skin
- Heavy breathing
