Elderly Care Recipes: Homemade Applesauce

Elder Care in Darien, CT

Elder Care in Darien, CTThe summer is coming to an end and the fall is looming just around the corner, which means that apple season is here. This is the perfect time for you to head out to your local pick your own apple orchard with your aging loved ones and their elderly health care services provider and spend the afternoon enjoying the beauty of the trees and picking your own apples out of the wide range of varieties available through the end of summer and the first couple of months of fall. Not only does this activity encourage more physical activity in your elderly care plan with your seniors, it also boosts their emotional health, stimulates their mental health, and creates lasting memories you can treasure well after your care journey with them comes to an end.

When you get home from the orchard with your abundant harvest of ripe apples, or if you do not have an orchard nearby and are just heading to the farmer's market or store to take advantage of the delicious apples that come into season at this time of year, finding ways to use them all ensures you get the most benefit without letting them go to waste. One of the simplest and most crowd-pleasing ways to use an abundance of apples is making homemade applesauce. This recipe creates delicious applesauce perfect for enjoying on its own or in other recipes, and fills your parents' home with welcoming, comforting smells you will want to recreate throughout the year.

What You'll Need

  • 6 pounds of apples. You can use any variety, but the type of apple you choose will make an impact on the texture and flavor of the sauce. For a traditional applesauce, choose a classic red baking apple
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1 lemon
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Apple peeler
  • Apple core remover
  • Sharp knife
  • Large stockpot
  • Heat resistant spoon
  • Serving bowl
  • Clean glass jars
  • Potato masher or food processor

What to Do

  • Remove the cores from the apples and peel them. Do not worry about getting every bit of peel away as leaving some just adds extra texture and fiber to your sauce
  • Use the sharp knife to chop the apples into 8 pieces each
  • Place the large pot over medium heat and add the apples
  • Pour the apple cider over the apples and use the heat resistant spoon to stir them together
  • Roll the lemon across the counter to release the juices
  • Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice into the pot, holding it with the sliced edge up so that the seeds do not fall out into your sauce
  • Add the remaining ingredients and stir to dissolve the sugar and incorporate the spices
  • Allow the sauce to cook for 25 minutes, stirring frequently, or until the apples are softened
  • Remove from the heat and use the potato masher to smash the apples to create a chunky sauce, or distribute them into the food processor and puree for smooth sauce
  • Transfer into the serving bowl or into the jars and store in the refrigerator to enjoy later
