Cancer Prevention Tips for Seniors

Senior Care in Greenwich CT

Senior Care in Greenwich CTAs your parent ages, you may begin to have concerns about them developing chronic medical conditions and health problems such as cancer. While a person’s risk for cancer can by influenced by genetics and environmental factors, there are several things that seniors can do to reduce their risk of developing cancer. In fact, several very simple lifestyle changes can have a big impact when it comes to cancer prevention and great overall health. Read on for some lifestyle changes your senior parent can make to help them reduce their risk of developing cancer.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Being overweight or obese can increase a senior’s risk for cancer as well as other health problems, but being underweight can cause health issues, as well. This is why it is important for seniors to talk with their doctor about what a healthy weight for them is and what they can do to achieve and maintain it.

30 minutes of physical activity a day is what is recommended for cancer prevention. Exercise is great for the body and the mind, so this is a great habit for your senior parent to start. Daily exercise can feel like a chore to some, but it doesn’t have to be! Encourage your parent to find something they enjoy such as a group exercise class, water exercise, taking brisk walks, or using resistance bands.

Eat More Plant-Based Foods and Less Unhealthy Meats

A diet that is rich in whole grains, colorful vegetables and fruits, and legumes is a great defense against cancer. Limiting fatty meats is also a great idea, but getting protein is still essential. Encourage your parent to get their protein from lean sources such as beans, fish, and chicken while also eating a variety of fruits and vegetables. It is also important for seniors to avoid foods that are high in sugar, such as soda, and heavily processed foods that contain high levels of sodium.

Limit Alcohol

If your parent consumes alcohol, encourage them to limit their alcohol intake to 1 drink a day for women and 2 drinks a day for men. This can also help them to maintain a healthy weight.

Quit Smoking

Smoking can lead to many types of cancer as well as other serious health problems. Encourage your parent to talk to their doctor about ways they can start quitting smoking as soon as possible. Quitting smoking is difficult and they will likely need your support and encouragement.
