These can be overly challenging, though, so keep your loved one's abilities in mind when determining if the neighborhood is a good location.
Parks and Nature Trails
Taking a walk through a park or a nature trail has the added advantage of being peaceful and an excellent way to reconnect with nature. Look for parks or nature trails near your loved one's home. You might be surprised at the variety of nature trails that are available even in a city area.
School Tracks
Most schools have paved tracks on which locals can walk any time. Tracks have the advantage of using softer materials than asphalt or concrete which can be easier on your loved one's joints. Some walking groups also meet at local school tracks, so this can be a terrific social opportunity for your loved one.
Malls
One of the most common indoor walking locations is a mall. Quite a few walking groups meet at indoor malls, often outside of normal business hours so they're less crowded, and your loved one has the advantages of a controlled environment, no obstacles, and a smooth, even surface on which to walk. Your loved one can walk safely inside, even if the weather outside isn't so great.
In the House
For those times when it's not possible to get out and about or your loved one just doesn't feel like going anywhere, walking at home is definitely an option. A treadmill is a perfect option for walking at home, of course, but it isn't necessary at all. Your loved one can get just as much exercise from walking in place as she can while walking anywhere else.
Your loved one can walk with you or with her home care providers if you're uncomfortable with the idea of her working out alone. This gives you both peace of mind while letting her get some exercise in, too.
