What Elders Can do to Reduce Migraine Pain

Home Care in Riverside CT

Home Care in Riverside CTMigraines can cause serious pain for its victim, making it difficult to concentrate on or accomplish any other task. Older adults may have these severe headaches due to a side effect of their medication or because of other health conditions. Having a home care provider will accomplish tasks that have become too difficult for the elder to do, while also encouraging them to make lifestyle changes. To help your loved one reduce their migraine symptoms, here are some techniques they can follow, with the help of a senior care provider or family member.

Get Plenty of Sleep
Migraines could be triggered by poor sleep habits. In order to help your loved one get at least 8 hours of sleep each night, try these techniques:

  • Create a routine. Waking up and going to bed at the same time every day will program the body to sleep soundly through the night. If the elder is feeling tired during the day, they should not take a nap that lasts any longer than 30 minutes. If their nap exceeds that amount of time, it will be more challenging to sleep at night.
  • Relax at the end of the day. Prior to bedtime, the senior should do something that helps them relax. This may be reading a book, listening to soothing music, or taking a warm bath. Drinking alcoholic or caffeinated beverages or eating heavy meals at night will affect how well they sleep at night.
  • Remove any distractions. Minimize any distractions in your loved one’s bedroom in order to help them rest better throughout the night. This includes turning off the phone, TV, radio, or any other noisy distraction.

Eat a Healthy Diet
What elders eat could either reduce or increase migraines. Follow these dieting tips to keep your loved one healthy and free from painful headaches.

  • Do not skip meals. Skipping meals can actually cause migraines to develop. Eat every meal at the same time each day.
  • Write in a journal. Does your loved one experience migraines after eating certain foods? Keeping a food journal may be able to answer that question. Encourage your loved one to write what they eat prior to a migraine developing to have a better idea of what foods should be avoided.

Manage Stress
Stress can be the culprit to severe migraines, so knowing how to manage it can make a huge difference. If your elderly parent is experiencing stress in their lives, have them try these techniques to better manage it for their health.

  • Ask for help. Elders may feel a heavy dose of stress when they have a number of responsibilities, yet are unable to get them all done. If this is causing your loved one stress, asking for help will lift this weight off of their shoulders. Other family members or caregivers can chip in to help make the senior’s life much easier.
  • Exercise more. A brisk walk or aerobics class will release endorphins that will improve their mood and relieve their stress. However, elders with health problems should consult a doctor prior to beginning any physical activity.
  • Meditate. Meditating is a great way to take a few quiet moments to focus on their breathing and not on the stress in their lives.

Migraines can be painful and debilitating, but these tips will help your loved one reduce their migraine symptoms and move on with their life.
