June is Perennial Gardening Month

Home Care in Norwalk CT

Home Care in Norwalk CTIf your elderly loved one has begun to cultivate a garden at their home, chances are they are continuing to work on maintaining it as summer comes. Gardens can be beautiful to look at, spend time in, and even harvest, but they do take some dedication to keep them looking lush and healthy. If your elderly loved one enjoys gardening, however, they probably don’t mind the weekly work of weeding, getting rid of pests, planting, and cutting out plants.

One way to make gardening easier from year to year is to plant perennials. Perennials are plants that return every year and do not have to be replanted as annuals do. June is observed as Perennial Gardening Month to encourage gardeners to make use of these versatile types of plants. If your loved one would like to add some perennial plants to their garden this June so that they can continue to enjoy them for years to come, here is a list of some popular, lovely, and low-maintenance perennial plants:

Purple Coneflower

Also known as echinacea, these purple flowers will bloom all throughout the summer. They will also stand up to heat and draught very well, making them a great low-maintenance plant. They can get quite tall, so they are best planted in the middle or back of the bed.

Peonies are a gorgeous addition to any garden. They bloom in late spring and early summer and their blossoms are large, colorful, and very fragrant. Peonies will return year after year as a shrublike plant.

Threadleaf Coreopsis

If your loved one would like to have color in their garden all summer long, threadleaf coreopsis is a great perennial option. This plant produces small flowers that resemble daisies and come in a variety of colors and will cover the ground like a blanket. They are easy to care for and will continue to bloom throughout the summer.

Black-Eyed Susan

Nothing is more reminiscent of summertime than black-eyed susans in full bloom. These black and yellow daisy-like flowers will continue to bloom from midsummer all the way until fall. Like many other perennial plants, black-eyed susans are easy to care for and can tolerate draught and heat. They are best planted in full-sun and toward the back of the bed as they can grow to be about 2 feet tall.
