How Can You Help Your Senior Loved One Deal with Substance Abuse?

Caregivers in Rowayton CT

Caregivers in Rowayton CTAs older adults continue to age, their need for prescription and over-the-counter medications may increase. Unfortunately, these numerous drugs have left some seniors dependent on the effects of their medications. Pills are not the only substance that has been abused by older adults; some seniors turn to alcohol or illegal drugs to help them cope with a traumatic event, loss of a spouse, new diagnosis, or other factor that may be leaving your loved one feeling depressed.

With the help of caregivers and these tips, elderly adults will be able to get the help they need in order to rid their bodies of this unhealthy habit before it is too late.

  • Identify the cause of their abuse. Before you can try to help the elder, you need to determine why they are turning to drugs and/or alcohol. Did they experience a natural disaster? Has someone close to them passed away? Were they recently diagnosed with a life-altering medical condition? Once you have pinpointed their reason, you will better assist them with kicking their unhealthy habits.
  • Have an intervention. “Intervention” may be too strong of a word and something that can easily cause the elder to feel defensive. Instead of having a group of family members and/or friends talk to the elder about their substance abuse problem, consider meeting with them one-on one. They will be more open to listening to you and other loved ones if they do not feel like they are being ganged up on.
  • Timing is everything. Before deciding to bring up this sensitive topic, make sure the senior is in a favorable mood and will most likely be willing to listen to you. If their mood shifts to a darker, more negative one, then drop the topic and bring it up at a later time when the elder is once again in a happy mood.
  • Ask for professional help. If the older adult refuses to listen to the concerns of their family members, then maybe they will listen to their doctor, a therapist, or other healthcare professional. If you are worried over the health of your loved one, ask their doctor to speak with them about possible treatment programs and what could happen if they continue down the path they are going.

Like any habit, substance abuse can be a very difficult one to quit. It is important that you provide the love, support, and patience your parent will need during this difficult time in their life in order to help them conquer their unhealthy urges.
