Medicare - What Does It Cover?

Senior Homecare

A question frequently asked when people research private duty homecare services is; "Does Medicare pay for home care services?"  The home care industry, at this time, is not approved for Medicare coverage or reimbursement.  This article addresses specifically what is covered by Medicare under the home health umbrella and what is not.

What isn’t covered?

  • 24-hour-a-day care at home
  • Meals delivered to your home
  • Homemaker services like shopping, cleaning and laundry when this is the only care you need, and when these services aren’t related to your plan of care.
  • Personal care given by home health aides like bathing, dressing and using the bathroom when this is the only care you need.

What is covered?

Home health aide services may be covered when given on a part-time or intermittent basis if needed as support for skilled nursing care.  Home health aide services must be part of the care for your illness or injury.  Medicare doesn’t cover home health aide services unless you’re also getting skilled care such as nursing care or other physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech-language pathology services from the home health agency.

The average Medicare “episode of care” lasts 45 days, with patients getting an average of 3 visits per week.  The average length of a visit is one hour, which includes documentation time of approximately 20 minutes.  Therefore, the client is getting 40 min. 3 x week therapy.

So what happens the other 166 hours per week you or your loved one needs home care??
