Since opening our office Synergy HomeCare, there has been one cause extremely close to our hearts and that is caring for people with cognitive issues. According to the Alzheimer's Association, every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops the disease. There are currently over 5 million people suffering from Alzheimer's, and by 2055 that number could be close to 16 million. As we approached the journey of owning a home care company, we wanted to change the way people view the care of the disease. For so many, getting diagnosed with a cognitive impairment means they can no longer live in their own home. With all the developments in care and training, we know now that is not true.
At Synergy HomeCare North Atlanta, we have spent countless hours providing our team the knowledge and tools to become the leaders in memory care in Atlanta. All of our caregivers go through specialty training with the Virtual Dementia Tour by Second Wind Dreams. A program developed by P.K. Beville, the Virtual Dementia Tour provides groundbreaking insight and understanding of what a dementia patient is going through. Through this learning experience, our caregivers are able to provide a higher quality of person-centered care.
Not only do we have our caregivers participate in these programs, but we have also been honored to help facilitate this learning program so that other caregivers, staff, and family members can learn from the experience of the Virtual Dementia Tour. Our community relations liaison, Layla Marshall, holds regular Virtual Dementia Tour workshops around the community. "Being able to help give caregivers and family members the experience of what living with dementia is like has been life-changing. Once they are able to walk in those shoes, they can better design care plans and improve the quality of life for their patients."
"Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and has killed more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined."
Focusing on providing better caregiving and a higher quality of living is only half of the battle against Alzheimer's and dementia. Synergy HomeCare is a national partner with the Alzheimer's Association, and we participate yearly in the Walk to End Alzheimer's to raise money to fund a cure. Over the past two years, Synergy offices combined have been able to donate over fifty thousand dollars to the Alzheimer's Association. Just this past year we participated in the walk and we were also able to hold our second annual Wine and Fundraising event for the association. "We feel that what sets our home care agency apart is how specialized and focused we are with care for cognitive diseases. No other providers in the area offer the programming and services that we offer for families at Synergy. We are dedicated to getting involved in the local community to make a difference and do our part to find a cure."
