Are Seniors Lonely Because They Are Alone?

Are Grandma and Grandpa spending too much time alone?  Eighteen% of seniors live alone, and 43% report feeling lonely often, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).  The study also found that people 60-years-old and older who reported feeling lonely saw a 45% increase in their risk for death while 59% greater risk of mental and physical decline than their more outgoing counterparts.  Lonely seniors are more likely to decline and die faster.  Are seniors lonely because they are alone or because of the breakdown of family relationships?


Caring for a loved one living with dementia may present challenges to families already trying to balance work and time constraints. In addition, for those who are not properly prepared, learning to communicate with a loved one living with dementia may not be easy. Patience, compassion and perseverance are essential traits to have.
