Agency vs Private Duty
If Price Were All That Mattered….
Before you settle on a lower price provider of Home Care Services for your loved one, many factors should be considered before deciding. If you are hiring a “private caregiver” on your own, there are many significant risks, responsibilities and requirements you can take on. By federal and state regulations, and “employer-employee” relationship is formed and requires you to report specific information.
As the official “Employer” of an independent caregiver, you should consider the following issues:
IRS required “withholdings” and taxes must be reported and paid including Social Security, Medicare, Illinois and Federal unemployment taxes.
For the tax year, a “Schedule H” and a W-2 must be completed and remain on record for your Caregiver
Verification in the form of a I-9 must be completed to acknowledge your Caregiver is legally eligible to work in the U.S
What about a criminal background check in all 50 states?
Drug screen prior to hiring?
Employment verification check, to ensure no past problems with your Caregiver’s work ethic?
TB, Hepatitis B and a physical clearance from their physician?
Do you have liability insurance in place to cover possible theft in the home?
Make sure you are utilizing the services of a State of Illinois licensed Home Care Agency that are meeting all of the above requirements. If you choose to hire your own caregiver, be aware of the above mentioned risks and the additional costs beyond their paycheck.
